Back to the future 2 – Where are we now?

There Is Unprecedented Interest In Singing. Singing is blossoming around the world. The numbers of programmes featuring singing have exploded and hundreds of thousands of young singers are auditioning for their moment of fame. Internet sites like YouTube have encouraged anyone and everyone to contribute. New stars have been born over the Internet and not through the usual channels. Teachers are finding their studios full, even in times of austerity. It seems that many, many people of all ages want to sing. Teachers regularly tell me that they get requests for lessons from every age from 5 to 85. Musical and vocal tastes are changing as our ears, eyes and other senses become global—not local or national anymore. Global access to information means that we can hear any kind of music from the far corners of the planet. The Internet and television truly have made us “one world”, especially where music is concerned. The singers and future singers of today are exposed to all these new musical experiences on a regular basis. Singers of the current generation are not comfortable or patient with the old traditions of singing and learning. Not only are the singers searching for new horizons, teachers also must find new, creative, authentic ways of meeting the needs of this generation and their music. To that end, there are numbers of new vocal pedagogies being developed for different styles and genres of singing. There is a new sense of adventure in singing. Teachers are beginning to look outside of the box for bringing new elements into teaching. Interest in the science of voice is continuing...
Back to the future 3: Where do we go from here?

Back to the future 3: Where do we go from here?

How do we take the teaching of singing forward this century and into the next? Which of the current trends will influence teaching and singing? Here are a few thoughts: The hugely popular self-development movement has been gathering momentum for the last fifty years. Teachers of singing, in general, are just beginning to find ways to bring this into their own teaching. As a profession, they have tended to rely more on past teachings, often following a preprescribed pattern of those they perceive to be knowledgeable. They err on the side of the cautious rather than having the confidence to push the boundaries as much as they might. As more and more teachers become personally involved in their own development, they are discovering that it is related to singing as well as life. This is creating a new confidence in which there is more willingness to explore, experiment and enhance the teaching of singing. Large areas of self-development have come from ancient Eastern concepts and philosophies that are now globally accessible. The “old” has become ”new”. What are we gaining from exploring these concepts? The Eastern qualities gained from studying Qigong and Taichi are a sense of flow, the awareness of the life force and a new way of being balanced and grounded for singing. Emphasis on being grounded, flow of energy and the variety of techniques to achieve it will give singers new sense of strength, a more authentic sound and a quiet confidence. It is fascinating that many of our “sacred cows”, including posture and breathing, in teaching singing actually interfere with flow of energy making everyone...

Tapping into Wealth

Tapping into Wealth

Lynch, Margaret, Tapping into Wealth (using EFT) USA [AMAZONPRODUCTS asin=”B00D29CBIU”] One very effective and popular area of energy healing is EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT is a great self-healing modality that combines tapping on accupuncture points while tuning in and stating limiting beliefs and positive affirmations. This allows the person to access the subconscious mind and energy field to release interfering blocks. This can work wonders with singers who tend to focus on limitations and fears. It’s a lot fun to do and very easy. I have had some very interesting results and at the same time, a lot of fun working with the book and videos of Margaret Lynch. As every artist and musician that I know would like more money, I highly recommend her work. Margaret Lynch studied engineering who became a management executive with Fortune 500 companies. She was drawn to EFT and eventually became a full time practitioner and author on the subject. Her speciality is wealth creation—and she is very astitute and clever in her approach. When I was reading her book, I kept saying: “Those are my thoughts. How did she capture that so well?” In Tapping Into Wealth, she not only challenges many long held ideas you might have about wealth and abundance, but cleverly and joyously leads you through some very interesting and effective exercises. She has many videos on YouTube. Here are two of my favourites:   You may want to read this one for a more generic approach to tapping- The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living, by Nick Ortner. Qigong and Singing

Qigong and Singing

The concepts of flow and ease are embodied in many of the Oriental arts. As singers, we need balance and flow of energy physically, mentally and musically. For me, Qigong fills that need. The use of physical action through intention and flow of energy is perfect for music. Musicians and singers can all learn so much about their art through the practice of Qigong. Qigong is thousands of years old and was developed as a healing modality and a precursor to martial arts forms such as Taichi. As Qigong is so old, it has many forms and masters. The challenge is finding something that resonates with you. After spending a lot of money and searching for a way to work with Qigong via video, I finally found one that works for me. CoreSinging certified teachers have also enjoyed it and continue to practice long after the course. The clearest demonstrations and explanations I have found are those of Jesse Tsao. He is truly a master of many forms of Qigong and Taichi. There are two of his DVD’s I recommend for singers. They are now available to rent or download on Amazon. Eight Brocades J. Quantum Creativity by Amit Goswami

Quantum Creativity by Amit Goswami

Dr Meribeth Reveiw – Quantum Creativity Book Amit Goswami is a highly respected physicist whose latest book Quantum Creativity has captivated me. While he has written many books more for the mind that understands physics, this one is very readable for the general audience. And my, does he have a lot of wonderful things to say. If you want to understand this broad topic called “consciousness”, this is possibly the best place to begin. It takes creativity to an entirely new realm. “Scientific materialism has shaped modern science and Western society for the better part of the last one hundred years. By emphasizing the external world, materialism has excluded the relevance of our internal experiences of feeling, meaning, and intuition. Which in turn has marginalized the arts, the humanities, ethics, religion, and spirituality—indeed, our consciousness intsel—both in the academ and in society at large.” Goswami With that strong statement, I could not wait to see what followed. What does follow is a beautiful exposition of applying the amazing world of quantum physics to how we think and live and create. Energy Healing Books

Energy Healing Books

Energy Healing Books Recommended By Dr Meribeth There are many books available on healing—and many with very effective techniques. Each person will find a technique or path that feels right for him or herself; no one way is THE way. There is something for every mindset. It is helpful to understand that energy healing is working with the energy field and a person’s spirit, and not always the physical body. And, yet, amazing healing can take place at the physical level. The first two books on the list give very good overviews of the many avenues available for healing. Others here are more specialised. Finding Your Element Book Review

Finding Your Element Book Review

Dr Meribeth Review – Finding Your Element Since Ken Robinson first appeared on TED talks in 2007, I have been a fan. His ideas and discussion about creativity and/or lack of in in teaching have now reached thousands of people all over the world. I would urge anyone interested in education to look at his talks and read his books. His books have come some time after his talks became popular. Finding your Element, is a good guide for looking at yourself in a responsible and objective way. It offers a practical guide to honouring your passions and natural aptitudes. I would recommend this book for all parents, young adults or those wishing to make changes in their lives. Robinson defines and discussion topics like passion, mindfulness, and consciousness as part of the process of Finding Your Element. Here is one of my favourite quotes: “Being in your Element is about connecting with and dwelling in the positive feelings that express and fulfill your own spiritual energies”. Book The Power of Mindful Learning

Book The Power of Mindful Learning

Dr Meribeth Review – The Power Of Mindful Learning The Power of Mindful Learning is one of the books I include on the CoreSinging reading list for certified teachers. Her work has led the way to some of the changes we are beginning to see in education today. It is also applicable to the teaching of singing—where we are still behind in how we teach. There are still too many “gurus” out there who insist there is only one way to do something—their way. We have so many options and possibilities available to teachers and students. Students can only begin to take responsibility for their own learning when they know there are options. Langer writes: “The belief in a single right answer rests on a view of intelligence that emphasizes outcomes and expert authority…The capacity to achieve an outcome is different from the ability to explore the world and understand experience…” She goes on to discuss the difference between concepts of mindfulness and intelligence. I love this quote as well: “Mindful decision making, as opposed to decision making passively based on data assembled by outside observers, is a process of active self-definition”. The more balance approach to teaching and learning involves understanding and knowing the data or the science and really testing it for yourself and then finding your own way to apply it. How much of what you teach is really yours?? Books about Teaching and Learning

[rev_slider slider7] Teaching and Learning Books One thing we know for sure is that the ways we teach and learn have to change to meet a very new and exciting paradigm of education. What has served us well in the past does not fit the fast moving world in which we exist today. We need to make sure that education in the arts serves, rather than hinders, learning and performance. The avenues of creativity and innovation have never been greater. The open-minded will enjoy this—and those who still live in the past will fight it. Which are you? If you have not heard Ken Robinson’s TED talk, Do Schools Kill Creativity. Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity. Also: Bring on the Learning Revolution. In this poignant, funny follow-up to his fabled 2006 talk, Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for a radical shift from standardized schools to personalized learning — creating conditions where kids’ natural talents can flourish.
